Thanks for all of the replies and help. I am reading a serial data stream from a particle counter. They are always outputting. So I can read them whenever I want. It starts with an "=" and ends with a "CRLF", no handshaking. I massage the data and then stream it to a PC for data logging. The data from the counters changes slowly, so if I miss a few streams it's ok. I am opening 6 ports (3in 3out) at the begining of the program and read from them when I ready. It seems to be working good so far. KenT and JoeT PS I will look into the hardware solutions if it becomes a problem. --- In AVR-Chat@yahoogroups.com, mpdickens <md30022@y...> wrote: > > --- David VanHorn <dvanhorn@c...> wrote: > > > You'll be far better off to use a low end AVR with > > hardware, or software uart, and have THAT act as > > your uart chip. > > I agree.
