first version of .NET platform published under
Windows, but due to it's structure in use, it could be
portable, google for MONO project which is a port of
.NET Framework under Linux. or even ROTOR project.

At the other hand, if .NET belongs to Windows only,
why you can not create and access a pipe using
FileStream?
