FYI

Hirose make a rectangular housing which takes pins. The pins are crimped
individually onto wires and then inserted into the housing. Hirose product
name is: '2.54mm Pitch High Density Connector'. 

3M make a product called '3M Round Conductor Flat Cable' It is a ribbon
cable with split sections.

Take 3m cable, cut to length. Crimb terminals on split ends of cable. Choose
hirose housings. Insert pins. Have fun.

Yes, a bit more. We sliced the wires of the ribbon cable apart, lined them
up with the right pins on the 10 pin IDC socket, then crimped on the back of
the socket. A pain but it works.

We wanted to preserve the 6 pin connector on that cable as well because we
are moving to that format on new boards.

And when the AVR Gods in their wisdom change it again we will whine some
more and do something else :) We already lost the ability to leave a serial
cable plugged into the board and an ISP cable plugged into it as well, and
program without having to unplug or jumper anything, because the AVRSIP (Mk
I and II) do not have the nPROG line the STK200 cable did. We used that
signal to pull the shutdown pin on the MAX211 level converter so the signals
from the serial interface were 'lifted' from the TXD/RXD lines on the M128
and would not get in the way of programming.

Hmm. I think I'm missing something. Since the pinouts for the two
connectors are wildly different, I'm not sure how this would work.

4 of the 6 pins line up (MISO, SCK, RST and one of the grounds) if you
flip the 10-pin top to bottom.

But it's a bit more than just crimping it on.
