Is your external memory chip still working?
It annoyed me it's max rating is about 3.6V, so I never dared to power it at 
5V, but I sure wish I could.
Maybe you don't use it, so you don't know it's gone?

Running the Butterfly at 5 volts and connecting to 5 volt logic circuits has
worked fine for me.
