STK500 SOS

2007-02-16 by Ranjit Puri

Hi all,

We managed to put a STK500 board out of action, something went wrong during
the firmware upgrade process (we installed the latest AVR studio), after
which we got a verification error in studio ... followed by an upgrade
failed message ...

We are now noticing the following symptoms
1. USB to RS232 converter, when connected to the STK, on its own and
repeatedly connects and disconnects to the PC we surmise that the Bloader on
the tiny2313 has conked off and is sending loads of funny data on the UART
causing some buffer overflow or the like to occur in the converter and
thereby periodically resetting it.
2. The status LED on the STK is a constant orange.
3. The Board is no longer detected by AVR studio and we are unable to
manually re-program the onboard uCs with the .ebn file

Anyone wid any advice on how to get the STK500 back to its working self, Plz
do reply..

A solution we are hoping will work (and we'll try this tomorrow) is to sniff
tiny2313 firmware from another board and re-dump it into this board ... we
donno if this is a feasible idea ... but we'll try ...

If u have a better Idea, or some insights due to a prev experience like the
one above.. Plz Help !!

Regards
Ranjit
