For a Mega8/M48/M88 or M168 you can have a look at one of my circuits at the link below, it uses 4 bit mode for the LCD. http://homepages.chilli.net.au/~ampertronics/images/MTERM2%20diag.gif If you want to use say the Tiny2313 there is a project on AVRFreaks.net called my_lcd_backpak (I think).
