Jim, did you read something about RS485/RS422? They support 1200 meters, using resistors on each end line. 120 ohms between lines of the transceiver and 680 ohms to VCC from one wire and 680 ohms to ground from the other wire. Vcc 680ohms 1st Terminal 120 Ohms 2nd Terminal 680 ohms ground.
