If you google a bit, you'll find my "getting started" package that has LCD, stepper, R/C servo, etc. With the LCD, you really need to verify that the timing between operations is correct. With a problem like the one you just had, you could have the code 100% correct, and the LCD would sit there looking like you hadn't done anything.
