I've just got this feeling that the gcc-avr elf debugging is limited to the 
newer tools.   Hmmm... I wonder if I can find my old ICCAVR installer and 
license file :)

Wouldn't be so bad either if the ATMEGA8535 had debug wire.. *sigh*

Will just have to keep on plugging on...
