I'd highly recommend eschewing the Basic Stamp in favor of the BasicX BX-24 from NetMedia (see http://www.basicx.com). It's pin compatible with the Basic Stamp II, it's faster, has more program space, has lot's more RAM, has single precision floating point built in, and is about the same price (sometimes less). Also, the BasicX language has a much more "modern" feel to it than does the PBasic used on the Stamp. I have used both in projects and much prefer, by a very wide margin, the BX-24. Moreover, the BX-24 is based on the AT90S8535 so more of the concepts that the students learn will prepare them for the AVR microcontrollers. I'm working on my first AVR project now using the ATmega16.
