Font copyright on systems with graphic LCD

Font copyright on systems with graphic LCD

2008-06-03 by Tim Mitchell

Hello folks, we are designing an AVR-based device which uses a graphical
LCD, and the Ramtex graphics library software. This can import truetype
fonts for use on the device, but warns that doing so may infringe the
font copyright. We are working with some designers who are keen to use a
particular Linotype font which is definitely copyrighted.

Does anyone know any further information about font copyright on
embedded devices, because all my web searching has found is a lot of
uncertainty over the issue.

In which case you should probably contact Linotype, or at least browse their
website.

Embedded or not. If the font is copyright, you will need to license it or at
least know that you should have a license and be prepared for the outcome if you
get caught. Have you got a Plan-B ?

Yeah, but I don't know that Brazil as really Plan-B.

If you include Goal, Paris, Adelaide, and Melbourne, I think Brazil turned out
to be Option-F, rather than "Plan-B" :)

I have never done anything with microcontrollers regarding setting or
changing fonts, but isn't the font actually set by the LCD or the graphics
library software? I.e. if you want Bodoni bold, don't you just select a
number somewhere that signifies this font? Or do you actuallyhave to
construct it pixel by pixel with the microcontroller?

If it's the former, I'd think the copyright was covered by the purchase of
the library software.

Or are gou getting the font definitions from somewhere else?

If you have the time, get "Font Bonanza 1.0" from download.com. That zip
file holds over 4700 TT fonts many of which (10%-15%) are freeware.
