Upgrading the firmware does nothing other than change its verision
number...

Also, Tsvetan's latest AVR JTAG devices are transparently upgradable
from AVR Studio, it's only for the first few shipped AVR JTAG devices
that you need to do this.

You might come a cropper with Atmel, unfortunately.  I think they're
wanting to protect their IP.  It's like the old days with the Mac
emulator for the ST: you had to have true Mac roms to run it, they
didn't ship ROMs with the emulator.

Do you have Atmel's permission to program the firmware into your device,
for instance? or are you going to write your own?
