I'll have to pick some up, I have some "Metallized Polyester" 100nf caps. 

No I haven't actually measured the wires but they're all about the same length. 
I'm not near the thing but I'll get you the length in a bit.

It seems to be wired up correctly (image 4) however: 

Have you physically measured the wires all the way back to the chip? 

Have you measured the supply voltage when all is connected? 

With such long wires you need to put a 100nF ceramic cap across 
the supply pins on the chip itself (pins 4 and 8) or the whole thing 
is likely to oscillate crazily.
