A lot of this stuff is done unbeknownst to the senders. Someone gets an
e-mail and accidentally clicks on the link, or maybe all they have to do is
download it, and it takes on a life of its own and sends the spam out to a
person's address book.
One reason I like gmail is that, for one, I can review all my e-mails and
delete the ones that I don't like online before I download them. And their
spam filter works pretty well, too. And I don't keep an address book on my
computer.
