Over the years I have adopted the habit of using the
"golden" system as a problem with the programming
chain will tend to arise in direct proportion to the
importance of the project & the closeness to the
deadline. Turning to a known good system tends to be
of great assistance in times of stress.

This includes:
"Golden" Test program to exercise generic target PCB
"Golden" spare Leads
"Golden" Programmer
"Golden" Generic Target board
2nd install on a different PC ( usually the laptop )

When everything turns to poo (which will be at 4am
when the gear is due on-site next day for testing) I
resort to the set of gear kept aside specifically to
qualify the operation of the tools. With the low cost
of the 3rd party JTAG unit it is work keeping a spare
in the cupboard for times like this.

At least this way you can isolate the fault to the
target & not worry about the toolchain or the new
"cool" silent update done to the PC etc...

If all else fails Wolf Blass has a really nice line of
budget Cab Savs which makes the problem go away for a
little bit ;-)

Cheers

Don
