Where to start with AVR

Another excellent way to start is with an ATMega32 kit
from Eddy Wright @ WWW.WrightHobbies.NET.  for $35.00
US you get a kit to build a controller with AtMega32,
programming pins brought out to the standard 10pin ISP
header, ISP dongle for programming, and a software CD
that includes the freeware version of BascomAVR Basic.
It only takes a half hour to assemble and you're good
to go.

BTW - there seems to be a new standard:
The new AVRISP mkII only has the 6-pin connector.

It's not particularly new.  The STK500 has both 6-pin and 10-pin ISP 
connectors.  The ATAVRISP also has both.

What I cannot figure out is why they didn't bring SS out to the 10-pin header (replacing one of the ground leads) thereby allowing developers to use the same header for both ISP and SPI

Since pin 3 of the 10-pin configuration is not used, you could patch-
wire SS to that pin.

AFAIK the 6 pin version is the original Atmel idea behind, the 10 pin
version originated from Kanda

Yes, of course the 6-pin header isn't new per se, but since the new 
AVRISP mkII has only this type, it will be the new standard after years 
of using the 10-pin variant for many of us.

I'm using AVRs almost from the very beginning of their appearance and 
the first available development system (STK200) had the 10-pin ISP 
connector...

Same here, but I've been using the 6 pin for years. Never understood 
why you'd want the 10 pin anyway.

As the AVRISP mkII has been developed by Atmel.

and was developed by Kanda (which is the reason for the 10 pins)
