Using STK500 to program chip on another board?

Hi Group.

The deeper I get into my project, the more I would prefer not to keep 
moving my mega88 chip back and forth between the STK500 and my board 
for re-programming.

I saw somewhere, that the cable used for programming on the STK500 can 
also be attached to a "remote board" for programming the chip on it. 

I don't have the slightest clue as to how this would be done or 
wired.  The circuit I am prototyping is currently on a breadboard, so 
I could add in jumpers and such to allow for programming on the bread 
board.  Can anyone explain to me what I need to do or point me to an 
existing document showing this?

There is plenty of information on the subject. Get a good background on what
you want to do. You must do some learning so that you don't have problems.

Start with the Atmel documentation for your chip and study the part on
serial programming.
( The AVRISP is the little programming adapter that just does programming.
Maybe you should just get one as it does what you what to do (and only does
that). You have to provide the power for the AVRISP from your board however
so take that into consideration. I use it here as a main way to program
boards. The STK500 is also used where I want to do more that just program a
board. I actually integrate them into bread boards as they are inexpensive
and very flexible.

Anyway...
Download the AVRISP manual and study that. Schematic is there also.

The STK500 manual also has information.

Review all that is in Studio on the subject.

But it all boils down to properly connecting the ISP6PIN ( or ISP10PIN )
headers on the STK500 to your board. You should easily be able to program
your board just like it was the chip on the STK500. You will have to be
careful about voltages and the like but it shouldn't be that hard to make it
work.

Section 6 of the STK500 user guide shows the connections. The note about the Vtarget
jumper is important. If you have a look at the AVR boards on www.olimex.com they show how
the connections would be made on your target board.
