Using a car battery to power your AVR is like using an atomic bomb to heat your house!  Make sure that you have a fuse to protect against over-currents and short circuits.  With the instantaneous power available from a car battery, it will take only a few milliseconds to generate enormous heat and you have risk of a fire.   I agree about the earlier responses concerning the use of a switching regulator and the other suggestions, but there are other solutions that would depend on how much power you need to draw from your power source for powering your circuit.   You should better explain what you are trying to accomplish and maybe post a schematic so that we can help you better. Good luck! Frank X. Guthrie
