Welcome to the new and improved H-P! What a waste... Nothing I've bought from those folks in the
last five years has worked correctly the first time.

Don't get me started, HP ScanJet 5200C scan a page then wait up to 20
minutes before you can scan another :o(

I am buying a Brother MFC next, have nothing but praise for my Brother
Laser printer.

Has anyone tried the AVR Studio 4.08 yet? If so, how is for bugs?

Not extensively.
Our pet peeves are still present, skipping instructions, and badly
displaying the source.

Also the forced update killed one of our AVRISPs, which was connected
through a USB serial port.

Yep..and it is excellent for bugs, nice and juicy new ones :-) I must admit
(darn) that I'm almost getting to like it, it is a vast improvement on 4.07.
There is a thread on AVRfreaks that I started with some bugs I did discover.
I have send a list to Atmel and they say that they have mostly fixed them
for the final release. I have been using it on and off for about a week and
haven't had to go back to 3.56 yet. Remember that it is still a Beta release
so if you can hang on for a little while (I hope) we should get the final
release
with a lot of bugs fixed.

John Samperi

Using it now, it finds the Jtag ICE better :o)

Locks up the ice and the ice needs power cycling, but then all is fine
again for a while.

Reads in the ExtCoff files from Codevision AVR nicely and lets me play
:o)

RE: [AVR-Chat] Has Anyone Tried AVR Studio 4.08 Yet?

2003-12-10 by Lyle Killough

Hi Jim,

I'm using 4.08 with the Tiny13 right now, so I really have no choice but
to use it. I've had some problems with the Project Manager window. The
work around is to only add/create files using the right click menu.
Atmel claims that very few have reported this problem.

My project manager window sometimes blanks. It comes back, but I don't
know how to make it happen at will. So far it hasn't created any
problems for me, although I've had to re-start studio to get it back at
times.

It vastly irritates me that I must still use 3.55 to work with the
Tiny15. Most of our products are based on that processor. BTW, there
is a firmware upgrade for the STK500 required when you go to 4.08, and I
_believe_ that it renders the STK incompatible with 3.55. Atmel's
response to my questions and concerns about this can be paraphrased as
"who cares". I suspect that I can simulate Tiny15 programs with the
Tiny13 simulator, but I haven't had time to try this yet.

The conditional assembly directives are very long overdue, and a huge
attraction for me as all of the projects I work on have analog inputs,
which are a real pain in the simulator. There are errors in the help
files for the new directives. Surf
http://www.avrfreaks.net/phorum/list.php?f=8 for more details here.
This list is monitored by the 4.08 development team, and they will
(occasionally) respond.

Apart from those problems, things seem to be ok, but I haven't got
hundreds of hours in yet. I like where things are going with this.

Do you know if the STK500 can be put back, so that it is compatible again?

Thank you,
Jim McGinn

Funny you should ask, as I had to program a few Tiny15's this morning.
Yes, you can re-load the old firmware. The file you need is called
C:\Program Files\Atmel\AVR Tools\STK500\stk500.ebn if you did a normal
install of AVR Studio.

I loaded stk500.ebn from Studio 3.55, programmed Tiny15s, loaded
stk500.ebn from 4.08 and went back to playing with the Tiny13s.

The load routine is in Studio 4.08 under Tools>AVR Prog.

Fortunatel there is a description how to reprogram it in the help
file (help -> tools user's guide -> AVRISP User's guide -> getting
started -> manual firmware upgrade)

Try it, worked for me.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
