Haha was this board one of the "small boards" you were asking about
the other day? If you got one from somewhere then they may have been
doing you a "favour" by including a boot loader with it, which could
have been erased by you but not have changed the fuses accordingly.

I'm glad you pinned it down, I was starting to get sleepless days :-D
