Project logger? (linux)

I need a project logger for my projects. Last night I was up and searched for bad solderings, I swapped random components and did other crazy things that did not solve the actual problem. This happens too often, so it's really time to keep up logs of all projects. Which project logger is a good choice? I use linux, avrdude, vim and eagle. Regards, Manne
