Akai S900/950

Thanks for accepting my request! I see what happened to the previous group, feel free to clue me in on anything to prevent that from happening again.

This past week I've become the proud owner of an s950 w/ max RAM installed. I have to say I am completely impressed with the unit, its all I expected and more, I love everything on this unit, everything has a lot of character, I don't know why modern samplers still don't have some of the features on s900/950.


I was wondering, has anyone had success using sysex commands to control the parameter functions from computer? I don't really need sample dumping, I found all the sysex command at yahcolorize and akai brothelowner, but I've never used sysex before. Is this more of a way to store settings or can it be used to control in real time? I'm fluent programming in pure data, if it is possible to use sysex for real time control Id really like to make something to set start/end/loop points on one screen.

At the moment I'm building a controller environment for another synth in sysex. I'm sure it can be done with the akai as well. Otherwise you can use MIDI CC for the same purpose. Which DAW are you using?

So the only thing I use computer for is to run pure data(PD for short, its similar to max/msp) and Ive been using that as a MIDI sequencer and to route midi cc messages to other samplers ive been using in the past. I've seen patches people have made in PD to send sysex to hardware, so I must have all the tools I need, 


my only confusion is with this site documentation of the s950 sysex:

it seems the program they offer for download only retrieves the sysex commands so it can later be transmitted back, which I think is either A)to help assist sample dumps or B) live control of parameters is not an option?

and I have to ask just because one of those two sites mentioned they are not responsible for any damage to the machines, is there any possible way to damage the machine?  I will be using a USB to midi cable not te rs232 port, am I correct in assuming this will be fine ( since I'm not doing sample dumps)


Thanks again for any help, Hopefully I can figure this all out and post the pd patch in the near future.
