Greetings to all, and a question for Ben Ling. :)

Greetings to all, and a question for Ben Ling. :)

2003-07-04 by Lincoln Kilby

Hello folks,

Morten finally convinced me to sign up for this group; I'm a regular
at Harmony Central's KSS but I've been becoming more and more
interested in the Ion ever since Summer NAMM 2002, despite the
naysayers. ;) Now it seems as if my interest might have been well-
founded after all.

Anyway, Morton keeps us up to date but I keep asking technical
questions and he says "Come to my yahoo group and ask Ben Ling, he's
a developer", and I finally had a question so pressing that I
decided to do just that. :)

So, Ben, Morten says that delay is on your ION wishlist. The
musical kind of delay, not the "The Ion has been pushed back to an
early September release date" kinda delay. ;) I can personally live
without reverb, and I know good reverbs are processor intensive, but
an onboard delay, even global (not per part), is something I would
really love to have. Tempo synched (and not), LCR... you know, not
much, just a simple, functional delay. Now, it seems to me that for
delay, you'd have to have access to memory (a megabyte will give you
just under four seconds of recording time at 24 bits, 44.1kHz,
stereo) that may or may not be available. How would you add
functionality like that via OS update?

I don't want you to give away engineering secrets or anything, but I
really do wonder how much hope I (or anyone) should have for this
being added.

Thanks, and hello to everyone again.

Kiru

I think maybe Delay is on the wishlist.

Because I got a mail from Ben some months back that he said the migt
be some short and medium delay that is why I said it maybe is on his
wishlist.

Morten
and note IOn is out in some stores in US now.

Re: Delay (was:question for Ben)

2003-07-16 by alesis_ben

Long story short: the Ion doesn't have delay because it doesn't have
reverb. Why doesn't it have reverb? That's a long story, I'll stick
to delay, here. :P

The Ion's effects chip is very powerful. It can do crazy filter-based
effects like a 40-band vocoder or a 64-stage phaser. It doesn't have
very much delay memory, however. So, no reverbs or long delays. The
Ion does have a short slap-back delay effect, but the max time is
80ms.

We will be adding more effects in future OS updates. Among these will
be longer delays. As you noted, we can't add memory with a software
update, but we can do get longer times out of what we have with
compression techniques (think MP3). It's unlikely the max delay time
will get over 500ms, but it should still be a very useable
improvement.

Selling my Nord Lead 2 for an Ion?

2003-07-16 by Jeroen van Zutphen

Guys,

I'm thinking of selling my NordLead 2 to finance the purchase of an Ion.
Will this be a good idea? I had my NL2 for about 6 months, and never got
really into it. I'm mainly a player, not so much of a producer, and hate
the lack of a proper display on the NL....

Grtz,
Jeroen

Personally, I'd sell the NL2 to finance purchase of an NL3, a much more
usable machine <g>

2003-07-16 by J3ens

Hello Jereon,
I think it's a good idea.
I'm selling my NLII too to purchase the Ion...;-)
I've tested the ION a few times in the last days and
my opinion is : The ION is better...
and now the purists will beat me...

The ION is being bundled with a free INEKO effects unit at Musician's
friend. Is the INEKO a decent box to use for delay effects?
