Did I just brick my VF-1?

Did I just brick my VF-1?

2014-08-01 by justinrharris66@...

I finally got one of these a few days ago, and checked today and saw it was version 1.00, so I downloaded the 1.13 files from here and the SMF player from the Roland site (I'm on a Mac). Followed the instructions to the letter, and at the end saw there was a check sum error but that the operation had completed and the instructions on the unit said to wait 40 seconds before powering it down, so I did so. After turning the unit back on, the screen is blank. Despite this, I tried resending the files, but no change.

Please, please tell me there is some way to recover this. I haven't even had it 48 hours and would hate for it to be dead.

My first try updating to 1.13 also went wrong. It also said checksum error and the screen was blank after turning back on. Then I tried the update procedure with version 1.12 and it worked.

Is your unit yet responding when you hold the WRITE and < buttons while turning on ("Flash Update" message on screen)? If so, try it with 1.12.

Good luck!

I remember something about this updating but it's a long time ago so I
could be wrong.

But I somehow remember it was not possible to update from version 1.00
directly to 1.13.
You first have to update to 1.12 and after that to 1.13

Succes !

Unfortunately, holding the WRITE and < buttons doesn't bring up the Flash Update screen. Despite that, I've still tried sending the 1.12 and 1.10 uodates, from my MBP as well as an ancient Windows XP desktop unit I dragged out to try fixing this (although I only tried 1.13 from that machine). No change, of course. The screen lights up but no text appears and no sound passes through.

That info should be in 68 pt. font at the top of the Read Me included with the files. :(

For posterity, this is the message Roland's service dept. just sent me:

"I spoke with our Technician and explained the issue you are having. Unfortunately a checksum error indicates the main board will need to be replaced. The cost of a new main board is $164.40 ( a discounted price) plus $60.00 for labor. He said there would be a 1% chance he could clear the error however that chance is VERY RARE and it he was able to do so the labor rate would be $60.00. Please lets us know how you would like to proceed.

Best regards,
Roland Service Department"

So better to buy another used one. For anyone updating, maybe try doing the 1.12 update first.
