Trouble Updating VF-1 Firmware

Trouble Updating VF-1 Firmware

2015-07-04 by member@...

I'm trying up update the firmware of my VF-1 - my intent is to be able to use the editor from the files section here.

My VF-1 is on version 1.00 - I tried up flash it to 1.13 (and 1.12) but during the process at various points, on the VF-1 panel it says MIDI Format Err! and Flash Chksum Err.

I've tried the smf player from the files section here and I've tried to do it from Reaper with the same results.

The MIDI ports I'm using are on my Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 (Firewire).

Once the attempted update completes, when I fire up the VF-1 it lights up green but is otherwise blank.

If I power on holding down the left parameter and write buttons, it goes into flashing mode, but none that I've tried will "take".

Any ideas? Is there some way to reset to factory? At this point I'd be happy to get it back to its original state given that I can't even use it now.

I tried again today with a different MIDI interface and a few different MIDI cables, always get Chksum Err at some point, still a brick...

I got a response back from Roland today, they are recommending sending it in for service (no idea what that would cost, or even if it is worth it).

The problem is a combination of computer speed and operating system. The best results are with a slow computer running dos. You can find dos programs that send midi files and sysex files.
Windows operating systems like xp and later are useless for this because of their multi tasking nature, the midi port data rate (not baud rate) will be erratic which over runs the vf1 buffer. Go back to good old DOS and your problem will be solved.

Thinking back. The last time I did that successfully using Windows was with cakewalk 9 running on windows 98. Think it was a pentium 3 or early pentium 4 computer. Win98 and earlier o/s run on top of DOS so ok.
Win xp and later not ok.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
