Mine sometimes turns on but does not finish booting.
I turn it off and turn it on againi, then it works.
Since you mention this in your reply below, i thought
you might know something about this strange behavior.

I'm sorry I wasn't clean that it is not sick. It is dead...only
the backlight to the display comes on...no text or graphics
displayed.

Hi all!
I know this problem. I contacted roland germany and they told me, that this can happen if you turn out your vf-1 while it is "starting up". It has something to do with the internal "bios"-chip.
They suggested connecting the vf-1 to a personal computer and update the bios with a midi-sequenzer and the corresponding system-files. There is a special key combination you have to press while starting up your vf-1. I recommend you contacting your local roland dealer - they might help you.
