Does anyone have any further info no the VF-1 SYSX format?

Does anyone have any further info no the VF-1 SYSX format?

2002-10-14 by Kent Dalton

I recently bought a VF1 and I have a MIDI patch editor that I wrote
for my own use that supports the ADA MP-1 and Digitech GSP-5 and was
figuring I could update it for the VF-1 since I have one now. I
grabbed the PDF doc from this forum's file section but it doesn't seem
to be complete.

As near is a I can tell the patch format in the doc does not seem to
comply 100% with what the VF1 outputs via a sysex dump. Has anyone
here really looked at the SYSEX output? I have some specific
questions/confusion if someone wants to help me figure out the details.

Anyone have a pointer to a contact at Boss who could help?

Thanks

Hi Kent,

Maybe i can help you out with some stuff. I wrote a (very basic)VF-1
editing program and therefore studied the VF-1 SYSEX structure
thorougly.
So if you have any questions, you can drop me a mail
h.van.duin@...

regards,
Bert

You need a MIDI port for your computer in order to communicate with it
via MIDI. Many computers that have a 'joystick' port built into their
soundcard already have a MIDI port capability built in (for example
pretty much every Sound Blaster card ever made by Creative Labs
supports this) to use this port as a MIDI port you can buy a simple
cable to provide the standard MIDI 5pin DIN connectors.

Once you've got a MIDI port setup the 'out' from the computer goes to
the VF-1's 'in' and the 'in' to the computer connects to the VF-1's
out via standard MIDI cables.

As far as software goes, there's basically nothing available specific
for the VF-1 except a limited (only supports the Multi 1 algo)
freeware patch editor available here and Sounddiver a relatively
expensive ($149US) and poorly maintained (IMHO, based on the POD
specific version which has a history of compatibility problems with
new Winodws versions, crashes often, and is generally broken).

The software problem for the VF1 is a real letdown for me. I've found
the availability of Computer Patch editing for the POD to be a
wonderful thing and it's a shame the VF1 doesn't have a similar
capability since it's such a great unit but has tons of tweakable
parameters.
