Boss VF-1 Effect Processor

I see that some of you have had issues where the VF-1 freezes at startup.  I just sold a VF
-1 on ebay (Don't worry, I have 2 left!) and while it was working fine when it left me, the 
buyer said that when he powers it up he gets light on the screen but it never totally boots.  
No sound.  Nothing.  I told him to try and reinstall the software and he's savy with using 
.mid files for an eprom update.  Is there anything else I can suggest before I have him 
send it back so I have to give him one of my other beloved units?  I'd appreciate any ideas.
