SMBus is an enhancement to I2C developed by Intel that fixes several deficiencies with I2C bus, such as adding a watchdog timeout to any device driving the bus. I've been involved with I2C periodically over the last nine years. Let's just say that there are many misbehaving devices out there. If we keep it simple, then there shouldn't be problems.
