Mark, If you haven't already, you'll want to pick up a java development environment. There's a very nice freeware version of JBuilder that I've used with good success - it has a very nice visual editor for UI construction. Also, there are freeware midi libraries available (sorry, it's been a while, and no specific names come to mind, but Google is your friend!!). Last time I did Java/midi development the Sun midi library was too brain-damaged to be of any use, although in the last couple of years that may have changed.
