If you are looking for a complex instrument, you can check MAM Warp 9. 
It has very complex modulation possibilities, it is essentially 
a monosynth without osc's.  It has a very special sound. 
It is usually much cheaper than the Akai filter, even at blow-out prices. 
 
Waldorf 4poles also provides a lot of possibilites.
