Not yet having one in hand it's hard to make a meaningful suggestion but...

Did you try changing the envelope's decay shape by having it control its own
envelope times?  The old self-feedback trick to make an exponential decay
more linear (or even convex) or vice-versa?  It seems the mod matrix at
least offers control of overall envelope rates so even though separate
control over decay would be best maybe a bit of control feedback would help?
