Hey,
So did I ever tell you about folding@home?
For those of you that have broadband connections to
the internet, and especially if like me you leave your computer on all the time
(and even if you don't), you can do a lot of good in the quest to disover
medicine and such by downloading and running the folding@home program.
Basically it is "distributed computing" i.e. a ton
of computers work on number-crunching data and reupload the work to the main
server at Standford university. (There was Seti@home which was a search of extraterrestrial
life--but in my opinion, we are better off helping the here and
now).
So you run the program and it is always going
whenever your computer is on. It doens't interefere with your computing "power"
because it is set to only take up idle cpu cycles and at the lowest priority, so
basically you don't even know its there and your computer runs just as fast. But
at all times, when you are doing not much (like reading this email) it is
churning away, crunching numbers and you are contributing to a worthy
science.
We have set up a team and when you configure it
upon install, enter your name (or moniker) and also enter in team# 13031. It is
just for fun to have teams and you can see where you stand in relation to the
others that you know on the team. It is fun. SO do it!
Download the program here:
And don't forget, join team# 13031 !!
Thanks,
Ravi
