It may be annoying, but I think if you rely soley on "advice", the
result is dissappointment like 75% of the time.  I guess it's fairly
safe to buy an absolute classic (e.g. a high-end moog), but other than
that...

As someone else mentioned, using headphones would give you a fighting
chance to actually hear something; many shops seem to often use fairly
random monitors anyway (I've noticed a common trick is to stick the
largest most gnarly amp/speaker on the most pathetic synth...).
