An alternative interface, like the M-Audio 1x1 USB MIDI I/F, is a fine idea. It's cheap, it's easy to 'install', and it works. However, if you are having trouble with an M-Audio 2496, you might try updating the driver first. Checking their web site, M-Audio released updated drivers for XP and 2000 back in May of this year. A driver update might provide a no-cost solution. FWIW, M-Audio seem to do a good job supporting their products in general.
