I will give you a short answer to your second question:

As far as I remember (it´s a few days ago), I have checked the Version
of OS by doing the following:

1. Download Evolver Sound Editor (Demo) from
http://soundtower.com/evolver/

2. Install and Start the Programm and make sure you´re connected via
Midi to your Evolver

3. Select via Menu: Midi -> Midi Setup

In the first line of the new dialog box, the Version numbers for the 2
Parts of the OS are printed. If "No communication..." appears, there´s
something wrong with your Midi Setup.

I´ve done this with the MAC OSX-Version of Sound Editor. Maybe it is a
little bit different with the PC-Version. And maybe there´s in general
a much easier way to check the os version. I don´t know.
