PEK voice expansion mod

2009-08-20 by massimo

Yes they have done it, but as you know the PER was (and PEK is) relatively expensive. The reason for this being that each Evolver voice is literally an entire Evolver board with all the digital control stuff, DSP and AD/DA convertors that entails. I suspect that in the case of the ProMoTetra they can use a single digital processor connected to multiple Curtis chips for the voices, and there's also no need for the DSP or AD/DA business, so I think you can see how it's much simpler and cheaper to do.

It's possible there could be a way of redesigning the Evolver with more powerful processors but that would be a big development job.

I love what the Evolver can do but I also reckon the Tetr4 is a great move. A lot can be done with those analogue voices and I think they've made some good decisions in the way the modulation options have been tweaked.

It's not as simple as adding a few more voice / filter chips - for a start you need the DSP to do the digital oscs, delays, HPF, distortion etc., and you need those additional AD/DA stages to integrate the two as well. So it's quite a bit more complicated and certainly needs more parts.

well, even if more involved than just 4 chips. , they can, and have, done it--- perhaps there is some greater cost, but its not any huge amount more research and development. .. the kit would be mostly a stripped down PER --- mounted INTERNALLY. with only the minimum parts .
