More on the OS X Editor

More on the OS X Editor

2004-05-29 by Harry Pinna

Mine won't bank dump from Evolver to Mac either.

Have any of you tried using the patch generator with waveforms? My results are either
nothing changes at all or the wave clips out on the negative side.

I have to say for $50 I'm disappointed in this editor software. Just sloppy things like the
OSC headings are all spelled OCS, the envelope graph windows don't show the envelopes
until you click on them and open them individually, and the total absence of any
documentation. I've seen better versions of early beta software.

I wonder if Dave is aware of this. His work quality and customer service is EXCELLENT,
Soundtower won't answer my e-mail. Unfortunately their work will reflect on his product to
some people.

I hope Soundtower is working on bug fixes and that's why my e-mail wasn't answered. It's
frustrating when a product is 80%-90% there but never makes it the rest of the way.

Hi,

At first I was in communication with Mark at Soundtower, who claimed it was
a bug introduced when he was merging the Poly code with the Evolver code.
He said it would be fixed soon.

I waited a little over a week and contacted him again. At this point he said that
I was the only one that it didn't work for so it must be something wrong that I'm
doing (he gave me several suggestions, such as that I had my editor selected for
Poly instead of Evolver (which I don't) and that I had the global MIDI xfer function
set incorrectly (I have it set to all for both in and out)).

I think you need to continue to send him complaints. I'll wait a bit more and then
send him another e-mail saying that some members on this list have the same
problem.

ditto, though i haven't seen the osc misspellings.

it's pretty unresponsive, and i don't like that it makes my taskbar
disappear.

he was pretty quick to respond to my request for an osX microwave xt editor

Same here...

Plus I find the total lack of documentation for a $50 app not only unforgivable but really
frustrating. Particularly when I was initially trying to get it to talk to my Evolver. The 'Help'
button is useless as it just takes you to a Mac download page.
Although I give Dave credit for getting back to me very quickly with a solution that got me
up and running, kind of.

However, after spending quite a few hours trying to edit some sounds with this app I'm of
the opinion that I've probably wasted $50. It's very buggy and hung a number of times, the
quirky envelope display is really annoying, as are the separate pop up windows that
appear when selecting various options (why can't they use standard
drop down menus?). The graphics are garish and very un-Mac like, with a distinct
shareware appearance. But apart from the fact that it just will NOT bank dump from the
Evolver into my Mac, it's just so incredibly sluggish, even on my 1Ghz PB. It's like editing
through treacle.
Unless this app gets a major overhaul I'm not using it again and I'm not recommending it
to anyone else either.

I forgot to mention the sluggishness. I was all happy with my 1.6Ghz G5 (my first
computer upgrade in 10 years). The OS X editor is sluggish on the G5! So for now, I can't
recommend this software either.

Thankfully the Evolver is easy to edit on its own, but I really wanted a way to store patches
with names.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
