well what a beautiful instrument that is!

I wish Dave would take a pause from designing new products to sort out Midi
CC# controls tho... this would make all the synths more desirable IMO

Re: [Evolver] DSI news

wow.. something the evolver always really needed.

knobs!

WAAAAAHHHH!!!
(just getting my tears in early, as I know the price on his is going to
break my heart...)

hmm.. speaking of knobs - that psicraft editor that was mentioned about 3
months ago.... their website is looking a little more developed now, but
still no date set for when we can buy their virtual knobs....
http://www.psicraft.com/
this is the first new bit of software I'm actually really hanging out for.

What CC# stuff exactly are you looking for?

Re: [Evolver] DSI news

2004-12-24 by Richard Scott

Hi Ravi, I want to be able to use 8 freely assignable midi CC#s. The Alesis Andromeda has 8 "midi slots" that can be assigned to any CC# and used as modulation sources, something like this would open the Evolver up to anyone using wind controllers, pedalboards, control surfaces, software whatever. In my case (using a yamaha windcontroller) I would like to use CC# 16, 17, 18, 80 and 81.
I'd like to be able to input tap tempo from any external CC# source as well.
for me this is the only oversight in the present OS. I have requested it from Dave and he suggested it was possible, if anyone else is interested I urge you to do the same as i get the feeling he is pretty responsive dude

Hi,
I just bought 2 evolver (fantastic possibilities) and would like to support your request very strong. I am working mostly with algorithmic composition and a few free cc's would enhance my possibilities exponentially.
Best wishes
Pieter

I'm hoping you'll be able to actually tweak more than 1 parameter
simultaneously from the hardware without eah one trying to steal focus as
you twist the knobs.

Except for about half a dozen miscellaneous parameters, there is a rotary
encoder or button for nearly every parameter. The are 4 buttons in the osc
section to select which osc the knobs in that section are tweaking. There is
the same thing for the 4 LFOs and the 3 Delays. Other than global parameters
and setting there is nearly no menu diving. Its all right there for you.

That's great, is it just an OS upgrade that can get ported to the poly and evolver as well?

Re: [Evolver] DSI news

2004-12-27 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

That I have no idea of.
;
There are competing features at play. The reason on the Evolver that knob turns seem to steal focus is that there is the "first look" feature which is the feature in which you turn just one notch and the display shows you where you are at. Only the second notch turn and so on changes the parameter. This is a good feature on the Evolver and Poly which aren't really made for live tweaking and have so many parameters in the matrix for so few knobs.
But on the Keyboard, I bet many will miss the first look feature, except that since there are rotaries instead of pots, and as such, there will be no big jumps when one touches a knob. The tradeoff leans towards more control even if it means having to tweak a knob slightly back to the value it was just before one touched it to see where it was at in the display.
I don't know if the O.S. will be redundant subsets for one for all or actually different for the keyboard vs. the others.

Perhaps a "look" button could be added, which when pressed, makes any
knob movement steal the focus (and thus display) without changing any
value. [I'd think this would require much less software change than
other possible solutions (like the Ion-style "section-edit" buttons,
which assume that the display displays most of the parameters for each
group of knobs simultaneously).]

Also, maybe the traditional evolver "first click is look only" behavior
could be made a globally settable parameter, so that people could select
whichever behavior suits their working style best at the moment.

I personally really like the first-click behavior on the evolver... it
helps work around one the most annoying problems with rotary encoders
(though only the NL3 method truly solves it).

Any idea if it will be possible or probable of an OS update so that we can
use multiple knobs simultaneously on the desktop versions?

I'm hoping you'll be able to actually tweak more than 1 parameter
simultaneously from the hardware without eah one trying to steal focus as
you twist the knobs.

Except for about half a dozen miscellaneous parameters, there is a rotary
encoder or button for nearly every parameter. The are 4 buttons in the osc
section to select which osc the knobs in that section are tweaking. There is
the same thing for the 4 LFOs and the 3 Delays. Other than global parameters
and setting there is nearly no menu diving. Its all right there for you.

Does anyone know if it's possible to get a closer look at it? I'd
like to see exactly what all the knobs are. Man, this thing looks
sweet!

Soundtower Editor

2005-01-12 by Gene Schwartz

Since Soundtower has been so thoroughly trashed on this forum, I wanted to
relate my experience.

While I think that the interface for the Evolver is efficient and can be
used in a pinch, I really did want an editor where I could view all of the
paramater values at once - a good editor makes it a lot faster to mold a
sound/sequence the way you want it.

When I first tried the Soundtower editor (version 1.3.6) I was able to edit
sounds pretty efficiently - I especially like using the editor on the
sequencer. Way better than using the Evolver itself, though there is
something to be said for turning the knobs on occasion.

There were some pretty severe problems that I ran into - the worst was that
I had to trash the preferences every time I ran the application, or else I
could only get the first program to display. And there were some menu issues
also that made it hard to edit some of the values.

Well, I have been in communication with Mark, he has fixed these issues in
about a week, has gotten back in touch with me when I emailed, and has
altogether been great. I haven't used all of the features of the editor - I
haven't messed with the Genetics function, for instance - I've had too much
fun just editing the sounds directly.

In any case, there is no way that this editor has been useless, and I
consider it to be money well spent. I have some criticisms of the
functionality, and from my dealings so far with Mark, I have confidence that
he will consider them.

In any case, I just wanted to put in a good word. I really can't comment on
other people's experiences, only that mine have been good.

Well I'm glad to hear he answers email for some people, sometimes.

Try emailing him about the microwave 1 editor he also sells, and see how
far you get... last time I emailed him about that, I got a reply
talking about the micro Q editor he also sells. And when I responded
specifying that I was actually talking about the microwave 1 editor, he
never got back to me. And yes, I am a registered user of the microwave 1
program.

I can't wait till the new editor company releases their evolver editor
that we got screenshots for last year. I'll buy it in a second.

speaking of them, it looks like they've updated their page:

http://www.psicraft.com/

there's at least a little more information than last time i looked.

Woah - that looks good - much more interesting than I thought - kind of a virtual user interface for the evolver as a VST?

I’m almost suprised no one else has thought of it. That will be really useful in logic where the midi automation is really primitive compared to the instant access of VI implementation.

midiquest loads as a vst or mfx, as well. with hope, this editor will come in audio
units format. they did say that there would be a mac version, but the information on
that page looks very windows-centric.

Well, it can be a Mac version, obviously, and still retain the vst format. In which case the actual cost would include the vst to au wrapper if you don't have it already.

But this sounds like really cool software. My point in mentioning the Soundtower is that it IS quite useful, at least to me. If better software comes along, I'll certainly try it, if it extends the Evolver functionality in a significant way. But right now I can display for instance all of the sequencer values or modulation values and routings on the screen at once, etc, which is exactly what I wanted the editor for.

right, and, as i'd griped in another forum a few days ago, "it's 2004. wrapping VSTs in
osX should be ancient history, by now. i'm loath to purchase a VST/AU wrapper this
late in the game."

...then someone politely pointed out that it's actually 2005, but really, that just
exacerbates the whole thing.
