Additive wave utility

Additive wave utility

2005-10-03 by Lawrence

Hello,

I'm interested in getting an idea of how much work is involved in
writing a small utility for the Evo/PolyEvo which would enable the
user to create user waves by additive synthesis; that is, specifying
through graph, the amplitude of harmonics 1-64 (or 1-32 if streamined
version easier).
This has actually been done for the Waldorf Microwave II with the
utility "Wave2 microwave" as well as through Emagic's SoundDiver.
Whats involved with creating a utility like this for the DSI synths?
I work primarily with hardware, and software utilities such as this are
not my forte. Any input appreciated.

Regards,

LWG

There used to be a pretty kick-ass little application from Interval Music
for the Prophet VS called "Wave Wrangler." You essentially edited in
harmonics - it then created a 128 sample MIDI dump and sent it to the VS.

I'd love to coax the author out of MIDI and Audio Software Retirement to
update the program for the Evolver (that and get him to update Transfer
Station for the Mac as well).

Hello,

Thanks for the many replies.

<<"I could write such a additive thing quite easily to generate a
single cycle">>

Ben, you've pretty much touched on what I had in mind. Something
allowing the user to specify amplitudes of each harmonic and then
translates to the wav file format that will load into the Evo.
This is what "Wave2MW" will do.
PPG/MW synths store only the first half of the wave cycle, then
inverts the data for the second. If the Evo does the same, they may not
be too different.
I understand integrating the midi functionality is another step.
Checked out Psicraft's editor and seems cool. If by editing "samples"
in the wave, they refer to individual harmonics, it would do the trick.
Wave drawing utilities are cool however, depending on what they do,
they tend to be less precise in terms of specifying harmonics you want
in the wave.
The additive utility would allow one to create "sets" of more closely
related waves that when sequenced with an lfo, produce something close
to swept wavetables.
Something uncomplicated in operation, but elegant in result.

OT: Scott, good job with the DX-to-FS1R adaptation.

Regards to all,

LWG
