question for evolver users

question for evolver users

2006-03-21 by skylab001

I am really considering buying a desktop evolver or a poly evolver rack but I had a few
questions first. I have too many analog or VA synths already(prophet 5, Nord Modular,
Juno, JX3-P, OB Matrix6) so I'm not looking for another analog, not really my reason for
looking at the evolver. But I do need something to replace a long since dead prophet vs.
I'm wondering how the digital pads sound on the desktop or poly evolver? I know they
have the same wavetables as the vs, and I know they are not vector like the vs but I'm
wondering if anybody has managed to create any decent atmospheric pads similiar to what
the VS was capable of? I only had a chance once very, very briefly to try out a poly evolver
and what I heard sounded good, but it seemed the presets I heard were more analog than
digital and also they all seemed to be sequences. All the samples I have downloaded from
the net seem to be either more analog stuff or really harsh and noisy stuff. Also I'm not
sure how limiting it is being 4 voices, I know on my prophet I do quite often run out of
voices. Anyway just curious to see what people think.

Oh yeah, how is the unit with external sysex controllers.....is there any aliasing or delays
when controlling them?? I know on my OB the filter aliases as well as skips about when I
move the knobs on my sysex controller too fast, and live control is a big issue for me.

I've never played a VS, so I can't compare. However, I will tell you this, the Evolver is very capable of making digital sounds if you want it to. I am very happy with this machine you program lots of cool stuff with or without the sequencer from spacey to crazy - subtle to obnoxious.
I have the mono desktop model so I pretty much use its own programming interface, so I can't tell you how it responds to external controllers. If your concerned about the number of voices.... well, I guess you could get two 4 voice rack versions for about $300 more then a 4 voice keyboard version - considering you already have a programming interface. I can honestly say though that with the delay and feedback lines, you can get some pretty big pads out of it with only 1 voice (I couldn't imagine what it would be like with 4+ voices)....
