Problem with PEK (OSC 1 of 4th voice broken...?)

Problem with PEK (OSC 1 of 4th voice broken...?)

2006-09-15 by Tom Prayne

Hi,

I was just about to send this to DSI support, but maybe here also
somebody has an idea...?

I just bought a PEK and received it today.

When playing it, I noticed that the 4th voice sounds a bit different
than the others... I checked with the "Basic Program" in memory slot
128 and solo'd each oscillator. It seems like OSC 1 of the first
voice would have a problem - when playing the same key four times in
a row (with OSC 1 L solo'd), I don't hear anything (or just a very
soft signal) when the LEDs on the right side of the Evolver indicate
that the 4th voice is used.

The other three OSCs don't behave like that, they play on every voice.

I sent out 1/4th notes from my software sequencer at Velocity 127 and
recorded the Evolver's audio output with Basic Program 128. I made
sure that the first note is always played by the 1st voice.
There are 2 files - one with all OSCs of the Basic Program patch and
one with OSC 1 solo'd.
I don't have any of the single voice outputs on the backside of the
Evolver connected, just the stereo main out.

Ip uploaded the recorded audio files to my website, so if anybody's
interested...:

Do you have any idea...? Is this a hardware failure...?

thanks & greetings,

Tom

Based on hearing your sound files, I would come to the same conclusion that it is some
kind of hardware issue. I can't think of any setting in software under program mode that
would make this occur. Perhaps one of the connections on that mono-evolver voice card
came loose, or worse, got knocked. I would not be one to know what the heck is going on
inside the PEK, but I do know that it's based on four mono-evolvers running off four
separate evolver cards, so maybe you will only need to part with just the one, or Dave
might have some other elegant solution... Sorry I could not help any more.

"Architecturally" the PEK is 4 mono evolvers, but they are not on
separate cards.

[Open it up and look, it's quite easy compared to many synths -- you
don't even have to move it off its stand, a couple of screws and the
whole front-panel tilts up.]
