Issue: Digital Noise/Distortion using HPF together with Distortion

Issue: Digital Noise/Distortion using HPF together with Distortion

2007-03-19 by sdumor

HI everybody,
I bought a beautifull brand new PEK a few weeks ago, enjoyed its
wonderfull rich and deep sound until I discovered that with some
factory patches, I couldn't use the HPF together with Distortion
without hearing an horrible digital noise & distortion. For example,
if I try to edit the Patch 10 Bank 1, I can tweak the HPF or the
Distortion parameters alone but if I try to use both (even at a
setting of 1 for the HPF and 2 for the Distortion), then I just get
an awfull digital noise/distortion which is as loud as the "normal"
patch sound!!
I'm currently in relation with DSI Support, but I'd like to know if
someone already experienced this issue (or others) with their PEK
before. My PEK is certainly an early one because its serial number is
only a two digits one... Its firmware versions are:
Main v1.00
Voice v2.00
DSP v3.00. (You can know this by pressing the Reset button
together with button 1 from the keypad.)
Another question: The Clip LED is only relevant for the Voice 1 on my
PEK. The 3 other voices never drive it. Is it the same for you all?
Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Sylvain Dumortier

Yes I have this problem too. On my mono desktop evolver the HPF is
very noisy when engaged and this problem is compounded when using the
distortion. Let me know if you want me to contact DSI support to back
you up on this and let me know what their solution is - I'd like to
get this fixed but had assumed it must have been a programming problem
since the HPF is digital.

Hi Justin,
why didn't you report this issue to DSI?
Well, I paid about 2000 Euros for this synth which is definitly a great
synth but in my opinion, this issue is a big one. It's just impossible
to HPF and distort some patches and this is a big limitation. If it is
implemented, it must work, no?
Another grief is that a bunch of encoders are already jumpy: it's
impossible to use precisely some of them: when I turn them up they can
go backward or jump 3 or 5 steps!
This synth is really a killer: deep, warm, rich, powerfull but those
issues are really disappointing for a more than 2000 Euros piece of
gear!
I'll write you what they'll tell me to do...

Regards,
Sylvain Dumortier
