Re: [Evolver] Re: Another Evolver track :-) / Demo Loops / Beta Unit / Mellotron

2003-04-12 by Ravi Ivan Sharma

Well, hey! I was a beta tester, I think Ski got 002 just after me. I found some bugs but not all and I only added perhaps 10 patches to the mix. Ski, wow! 120 Patches!!! you rock! I had no idea! I knew you added some cool ones though.
I think it bears repeating the interesting anecdote. After I sent my Evolver Beta back to Dave, Dave was kind enough to send me a snippet of an email praising one of my patches that went like this, " >From another tester: "I especially like the sequence that's in Bank 1, Patch #21, when played around C1 or so. It's a very unique 10 step sequence, and I think that whoever did it is quite talented. "
So later when I recieved my shipping unit, I was immediately struck by how much I love preset A13; and I sent Dave an email immediately praising it.
And he then let me know that the author was Ski who had been the one that had liked my Preset! (which is now A1) that Dave had copied me!
Anyway I think that makes me and Ski sort of like Evolver blood brothers or something and that is why I am extra proud that Ski's patchblood is so inside the Evolver. Along with the master, Dave Smith's.

Sayer, you already listened to the "Demo Loops"?! Wow, that was
fast. Thanks for the kind words.

Beta testing...
Yes, I had beta unit s/n 0002, but I'd hesitate to say that I was
a "beta tester". I got the unit pretty late in the development
cycle, and I really just had it for the purpose of cranking out a lot
of patches/sequences in a short period of time. I sent Dave a grand
total of 140 patches/sequences. Of those 140, about 120 were (and
are) used as presets in the shipping production units. I like to
call them my "After Midnight" collection, because that's when they
were all programmed, after some very long days at work! ;) I have
to admit that I have some "stinkers" in there as a result! It was a
lot of fun to work with the beta unit, because the Evolver is such an
exciting little machine, and because it was an honor to work with
Dave. It was also pretty gratifying to see the Evolver get such a
great review in Keyboard mag, too (see
http://www.keyboardmag.com/r2.htm). Ken Hughes is a pretty
respectable reviewer, which made it all the better. However, I was a
little disappointed that Ken didn't talk a bit more about the quality
of the presets (or lack thereof! ;) ). On the positive side, of the
four presets he did mention, two were mine (the Bell patch and preset
13 sequence "Evolver Song"). He was wrong about the Bell using FM,
though... it's just some nice subtle modulation of some VS Bell
waveforms. Been meaning to email Ken about that one! ;)

Mellotron...
Wow, I'd love to get a copy of Boele's samples! I don't know if I
could do another MEL-LABS, though... geez, that was a project and a
half! I guess I shouldn't say anything, though, because the
current "S3" project (orchestral strings, wind, & percussion) is
nearly as big. The combined EX5/Evolver project with 128 little
custom waveforms is a pretty good project, too.

That is a cool story.

I have to say, that besides the very nice capabilities of the Evolver, I
never ever met a such a friendly synthcompany (read Dave Smith) as DSI. The
guy answers EVERY single mail and also within a few days and also in a very
friendly tone. He's a very nice exception in this synthworld.

Does anyone on this list know if he will release an OS update soon? I would
love to see a few little modulationdestinies added (like filterdecay).

But even if the OS stays like it is, I will use the machine for a long time
I guess :-))

Oh, one other thing. I hear a really nasty click when opening the
highpassfilter from 0 to 1 or the other way around. Is that explainable?
It's rather irritating.

Boele, regarding the OS updates, did you not see my other post "User
Forum Soundset and OS Updates"? The short answer to your question
is "yes". :D
