Vernon Thanks for your thoughtful responses thus far. I have been away from my desk for a couple days so here goes. I am good with PC's in general (used to teach certification classes) but have only dabbled in Linux. I guess I was wondering if sysex functions as a driver (which would be OS-specific). I have built a linux box from stuff lying around the house this weekend- it was a fun project for me and my 11-year-old, but I am waiting for my oldest son to visit to teach me the subtleties of configuration. But as I understand your post, I should be able to (install, deploy, load) sysex files on this machine and back up kit settings. It will be a few weeks since the lad and I are taking a road trip next week while the rest of my family travels abroad. I will keep you posted. I did find Rosegarden recently and I am excited about having access to a free powerful midi program that is FREE. Thanks and I will let you all know how things proceed. I apologize for any apparent denseness on my part- I go by the "Rule of Eleven." I must hear something eleven times before it penetrates. Creighton
