I was going to ask this very same question yesterday, but forgot! :/
It almost seems that the rubber deteriorates because it forms a 
whitish-ness on the surface as they age and get played.
However, I've always cleaned my pads with a rung out wet rag, and 
it's helped.
I don't think something like Armorall would too good as it would 
leave a film. No would I trust a rubber cleaner designed for the 
pinch rollers of a tape machine. But let me know if these 
damage 'your' pads!:O ... Kidding:)
