I am also 47, with 4 years on DTXpress I.

A teacher is definitely a very good idea.
As a complement, there are an awful lot of Drums courses available on 
the web (I must 
have at least 20 tutor books at home, with CD).
Also watch some DVDs, it is amazing what these guys are able to do 
with 
a drums kit.
