Weird: Control crash decay with HH

2005-11-02 by matthew jones

Hi,

Before I start, this is on DTXpress III std.

I've been playing around with the MIDI notes assigned to the pads on my user
kits. Wanting to assign notes above 100 for all pads except the rides, I
end up assigning the crash and crashE MIDI notes of 112 and 113
respectively. Unfortunately these notes seem to be being used (BY WHAT??)
since they show up with '*' to the left of the num, although I cannot see
any clashes in the pad note assignments, must be some control message hidden
away.

With this arrangement, my crash (both zones) get short decay when the HH
pedal is depressed, opening up when I release the pedal! This is really
weird. If I change MIDI note to 127 or something without a '*' this effect
goes away.

So: Is there some hidden capability in the unit that allows you to do
strange things to sounds if you assign MIDI notes the values above 100 that
are already assigned to some control message? Or is this just a bug due to
clashing? If I set all pads to MIDI note 101 for example, it makes every
pad play the kick drum sound, so there is definitely some weirdness with
chaning the MIDI note that affects the tone generator.

I wonder if I can get that velocity sensitive filter (VCF) effect on
gumybass via this MIDI assignment method.....?

Any clues to this weirdness appreciated!

Matt
