Thanks - so I now need a means to play wave files or mp3's triggered
by a drum pad - am I correct in thinking the DT Extreme has this
capability and function- or does anyone have any options for an
inexpensive digital sampler -if such a thing exists. ? The samples
will be under 60 sec duration.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
