Yamaha DTXpress/DTXplorer/DTXtreme

i'm having trouble sending midi to the drum brain on my dtxpress2 with 
both cubase and max/msp and am pretty sure all the settings on the 
dtxpress are correct. i can receive midi from it and can bulk dump and 
receive via dtxchange but can't for the life of me get it to trigger 
from midi. i can't send a message from midi-watch to the brain either...
i'm using xp and an m-audio audiophile firewire - any ideas?
